Menzies accelerates fleet innovation

Menzies Distribution is pleased to announce a series of key innovations in its fleet, combining higher levels of efficiency with enhanced driver visibility and safety.

An order for 63 DAF XF 480 mid-lift tractor units is delivering the first Menzies vehicles with camera technology that will replace standard wing mirrors with cameras outside the cab and interior displays. The DAF XF Digital Vision systems offer an improved direct view through the windscreen and side windows, in addition to improved indirect vision to the rear in all weathers. Large windows with ultra-low belt lines enhance the unmatched view.

The tractor units have been deployed across multiple operating locations. DAF trainers have been available at each of the Menzies depots to support drivers in adapting to the XF’s new technology, which includes further innovations made to both the interior and exterior of the trucks. The biofuel-friendly PACCAR MX engines, TraXon transmission and DAF rear axles contribute to a fuel efficiency gain of up to 10%, while longer service intervals support class-leading uptime on the road.

All driving related functions are operated from the steering wheel and the steering column stalks, as are the digital display menu, TraXon automated gearbox, and audio functionalities.

Introduction of the JOST KKS remote-control trailer coupling system is also dramatically improving fleet efficiency. KKS employs a unique combination of fifth wheel coupling, connectors, electric landing gear and remote control, all individual components coming together to ensure trailer swapping is fast and safe. In automating the entire coupling and uncoupling process, the KKS push-button approach cuts trailer changeover times by 50% and substantially reduces the risk of operator error, damage or accident at work.

In a third key development, Menzies has tested lifting-roof technology on 40 high-cube trailers across the fleet. The lifting roof allows loading within the space above the cant rail and then lowers back to maximum travelling height. Assets with a standard side aperture of 3100mm and 108 metres cubic capacity on a standard chassis height are achieving a 10% uplift in space to 118.5 cubic metres. Menzies has identified significant operational benefit, notably in the packaging sector, and the technology is being rolled out to support other sectors, with 70 further lifting roofs joining the fleet throughout the remainder of 2023.

Commenting on the latest phase of Menzies’ investment in fleet innovation, Adam Purshall, Fleet and Procurement Director, said:

‘We are determined to serve our customers with best-in-class assets in terms of efficiency, design and environmental impact. At the same time, Menzies is sending a signal to its drivers, old and new, that they will be working in the greatest comfort possible, with the safest, highest specification vehicles available.”
